DOJ Deploys Record 1,000 Election Monitors for Midterm Elections

The United States Department of Justice is deploying 1,000 monitors across all 50 states for the November 3 midterms, sparking widespread accusations of voter intimidation.

The United States Department of Justice is deploying approximately 1,000 election monitors across all 50 states for the November 3 midterm elections, the largest such effort in the agency's history. Led by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, the initiative officially focuses on compliance with the Voting Rights Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, specifically targeting language barriers and accessibility. However, the program has shifted toward documenting non-citizen voting and has utilized criminal prosecutors as monitors, leading to lawsuits from the NAACP and other civil rights groups.

State and local reactions vary by jurisdiction. Officials in Michigan and Idaho have characterized the presence as routine. Conversely, election boards in Indiana and Arkansas, and city officials in New Haven, Connecticut, have barred monitors from entering polling sites to prevent voter intimidation. In Wyoming, Governor Mark Henry requested a probe into "aggressive" and "irregular" behavior by monitors during August primaries, where some reportedly attempted to interrogate voters.

In response to the federal surge, the Democratic Party and nonprofit watchdogs like Common Cause and the ACLU are deploying tens of thousands of their own observers. Democratic officials have conducted tabletop exercises to simulate worst-case scenarios, including the seizure of ballots or the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. While the DOJ recently announced that FBI and ICE agents will not serve as monitors following legal pressure, employees from the DEA and ATF remain eligible. Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee is mobilizing 22,000 poll workers and integrity directors to ensure transparency.
