UK Stocks Rally Ahead of Budget Investment Boost
UK stocks rose Monday as investors anticipate Chancellor John Healey's autumn Budget, which is expected to include billions in state-backed business funding.
UK stocks rallied on Monday as investors anticipated the autumn Budget scheduled for Wednesday. The FTSE 100 ended the day up 0.7% at 10,767.33, with aerospace and defence firms such as Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems seeing notable gains.
John Healey, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, is expected to announce an investment boost alongside modest tax rises to support economic growth and reassure markets about public finances. The government plans to provide £20.4 billion in additional funding over five years for state-backed business lenders and infrastructure banks. This includes £15.4 billion for the National Wealth Fund and £5.0 billion for the British Business Bank.
HM Treasury expects this funding to support 100,000 jobs in artificial intelligence, defence, and green energy by 2035. Additionally, Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated the Budget will outline a path for defence spending to reach 3% of national income by 2030.
