Moody's Ratings maintained Japan's A1 credit rating with a stable outlook, identifying signs of sustained growth and inflation expectations anchored around 2 percent. This shift suggests a departure from decades of economic stagnation.
Martin Petch, a vice president at the agency, noted that Japan has coped well with recent energy-price shocks. He indicated that the primary test for the economy is whether this resilience can withstand future shocks and if productivity reforms can successfully offset demographic challenges.
The agency found that food sales tax cuts and spending plans implemented by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi have posed little immediate threat to the country's credit profile. However, Moody's noted remaining uncertainties regarding a 370-trillion-yen public-private investment initiative and the level of private sector participation.
