Kashim Shettima Dismisses Peter Obi's Economic Proposals in Abuja

Vice-President Kashim Shettima criticized Peter Obi's use of foreign statistics and defended the removal of the petrol subsidy during the 32nd Nigerian Economic Summit.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima criticized Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, during the 32nd Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja. Shettima asserted that Obi has nothing to offer Nigerians beyond the use of "dubious statistics" and economic prescriptions borrowed from other countries, specifically citing Obi's comparisons between Nigeria and Bangladesh.

While Shettima expressed respect for Obi's refusal to restore the petrol subsidy, he dismissed Obi's claims regarding the 2023 presidential election as a "delusion of grandeur."

Shettima defended the Federal Government's decision to remove the petrol subsidy in May 2023, arguing that fuel prices in Nigeria remain lower than those in neighboring Niger Republic, Benin Republic, and Cameroon. He urged the Nigerian economic community to support President Bola Tinubu's administration, framing the subsidy removal as a necessary measure to reduce the financial burden on public finances.
