Corruption Top Voter Concern Ahead of U.S. Midterms

A CNBC survey finds government corruption is the primary concern for 36% of registered U.S. voters before the November 3 midterm elections.

Government corruption has emerged as the leading concern for 36% of registered U.S. voters, according to a CNBC All-America Economic Survey conducted between October 14 and 18. The issue now surpasses food costs, protecting democracy, and gas prices as the top priority ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

Donald Trump has responded to these concerns by launching a fraud task force led by Vice President JD Vance and introducing a whistleblower reward program. Trump stated that his administration has waged an "unprecedented war on corruption and fraud" to prevent the country from being "looted and plundered."

Democrats have countered by linking economic dissatisfaction to the president's business dealings and net worth. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries accused Republicans of failing to lower costs while the wealthy profit, and Senators Mark Warner and Jon Ossoff highlighted the influence of special interests and the impact of foreign policy on domestic gas prices. The survey indicates Democrats hold a 4-point edge over Republicans on handling corruption, a gap that increases to 17 points among voters who view corruption as their primary issue. Most respondents also oppose elected officials or their families owning stocks in companies with federal contracts.
