Narendra Modi Warns Against 'Dimaagi Naxals' in Independence Day Speech

During his 13th consecutive Independence Day address at the Red Fort, Narendra Modi warned against the influence of "dimaagi Naxals," or intellectual Naxals. He asserted that while armed Maoist extremism is "breathing its last" in the jungles, these intellectual actors seek to create violence and unrest to drag society on the wrong path. Modi alleged that individuals with a Maoist mindset had previously infiltrated government institutions to influence public policy and called for them to be identified and isolated.

Opposition leaders from the Indian National Congress, CPI(M), CPI, and TMC condemned the remarks, accusing the Prime Minister of using a national occasion to stigmatize dissent and intimidate critics. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh labeled Modi a "master abuser," while TMC leader Saket Gokhale described the comments as "cheap shots." Other leaders, including D. Raja and M. A. Baby, characterized the allegations as an attempt to label opponents as anti-national or as a cover for state terrorism.

Beyond the rhetoric on Naxalism, opposition figures criticized the government for failing to fulfill promises regarding inflation and unemployment. Specifically, leaders like P. Sandosh Kumar demanded the immediate implementation of a one-third reservation for women, rejecting the government's plan to link the quota to a future delimitation exercise. In response to the backlash, the Bharatiya Janata Party criticized Rahul Gandhi for skipping the official celebrations, suggesting his absence reflected the "Dimagi Naxal" ecosystem.
