Senate Democrats Accuse Social Security Chief of Partisan Messaging

Senate Democrats led by Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have accused Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano of using official government resources to distribute partisan and misleading information. In a letter sent this week, the lawmakers alleged that Bisignano issued an unsolicited electronic message to Social Security recipients praising President Donald Trump's July 2025 tax and spending legislation.

Bisignano's message claimed that 35 million seniors received an average of $7,500 in tax relief under the president's leadership. Democrats argue that characterizing the law's temporary tax deductions as a tax cut is misleading. While the 2025 law provides a $6,000 deduction for single filers and $12,000 for couples, these benefits expire in 2028 and do not eliminate taxes on Social Security income as Trump campaigned to do in 2024.

The conflict emerges as both parties prepare for the upcoming midterm elections to determine control of the House and Senate. The Social Security Administration declined to respond to inquiries regarding the matter on Thursday.
