Vietnam and U.S. Advance Reciprocal Tariff Trade Agreement

The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam is advancing reciprocal tariff negotiations with the United States, scheduling delegation visits to Washington in October and November 2025 to finalize a trade agreement. This diplomatic push follows an August 1 executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump, which reduced the reciprocal tariff rate for Vietnam from 46 percent to 20 percent.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan stated that U.S. officials have provided positive assessments of the ongoing discussions. However, he noted that a temporary U.S. government shutdown caused by funding shortages could potentially disrupt the negotiation timeline.

Beyond the U.S. talks, Vietnam is expanding its global trade footprint. The ministry is pursuing free trade agreements with Pakistan, the Gulf Cooperation Council, and the Southern Common Market, while aiming to conclude a deal with the European Free Trade Association by the end of 2025. To support these efforts, the ministry is increasing enforcement of origin rules to combat trade fraud and circumvention.
