Romania Shoots Down Russian Drones Amid Black Sea Shipping Attacks

Romanian F-16s shot down two Russian-made drones over the Black Sea following a surge of attacks on commercial shipping that killed or displaced dozens of sailors.

Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets shot down two Russian-made Geran-4 drones over Romanian territorial waters in the Black Sea on October 17, 2026. The aircraft, launched from the 86th Air Base Borcea, intercepted the turboprop-engine drones near the Danube Delta, approximately 20 kilometers southeast of Sulina. Defense Minister Radu Miruta noted the drones flew at speeds of 450 km/h, marking the first time such models were shot down by the Romanian military.

The interceptions follow a violent escalation in the region between October 5 and October 15, during which suspected Russian air and naval drones targeted between six and seven commercial vessels. Attacks on ships including the Yara J, Wine Trader, Alfa Watan, and HS Dignity resulted in casualties ranging from 11 to 30 dead or missing sailors. These strikes targeted shipping near the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria, with two chemical tankers hit specifically near the Sulina Canal.

In response, Foreign Minister Oana Toiu announced that the North Atlantic Council will meet on Tuesday to discuss defense and deterrence. Romania and Bulgaria plan to propose the establishment of a new North Atlantic Treaty Organization headquarters in the Black Sea to protect what Toiu described as a global food artery. Secretary General Mark Rutte has met with regional leaders to adjust the alliance's defense posture, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the targeting of innocent crews.
