Global Food Prices Surge Amid Weather and Conflict

Extreme weather and geopolitical conflict have driven global food prices higher, prompting the Reserve Bank of Australia to consider interest rate hikes.

Global food prices have surged as a result of extreme weather patterns and geopolitical conflict. A super El Niño has disrupted cocoa harvests in the Ivory Coast, rice production in India, and coffee yields across Latin America. Simultaneously, a war against Iran has increased the cost of oil and fertilizer, further inflating production expenses. Since February, cocoa prices have nearly doubled, while global rice prices have risen by 63 percent.

Michele Bullock, Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, is monitoring the situation as food costs create a potential inflation crisis that disproportionately affects low-income earners. Bullock may be forced to raise interest rates early next year to combat this inflation, despite the primary drivers being international factors outside the bank's control.

The price spikes follow an attack on Iran launched by Donald Trump, which preceded the surge in oil and cocoa costs.
