Democrats Gain Momentum in 2026 Midterm Election Polling
The Democratic Party holds a widening lead in national polling and prediction markets as President Donald Trump's approval ratings decline ahead of the midterm elections.
The Democratic Party has gained significant momentum ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, with recent polling and prediction markets suggesting a strong path toward securing majority control in one or both chambers of Congress. Quantus Insights reports Democrats lead Republicans by 8.6 points among likely voters, a trend mirrored by a RealClearPolitics tracker showing an 8.5% lead. Prediction markets Kalshi and Polymarket assign the Democrats a 61% and 65% chance, respectively, of taking the Senate.
This shift is driven by deteriorating conditions for the Republican Party, including high gasoline prices, ongoing conflict with Iran, and low approval ratings for President Donald Trump, who holds a net approval of -19.5 percentage points. Historical patterns indicate that presidents with low approval ratings typically lose House seats during their midterms. Consequently, betting markets now suggest a likely Democratic victory in the House of Representatives, where flipping only a few districts could shift the majority.
A notable realignment is occurring among Hispanic voters, who now favor Democrats by 35 percentage points on the generic congressional ballot. This reversal from 2024 is attributed to dissatisfaction with the economy, cost of living, and immigration. In Texas, Democratic candidates James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa are polling competitively or leading in Senate and gubernatorial races. In Florida, Representative María Elvira Salazar noted that Hispanic voters who previously supported the president now feel "betrayed."
