Ukraine Deploys Turbojet Interceptors to Counter Russian Geran Drones

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the deployment of new turbojet-powered interceptor drones designed to neutralize Russia's high-speed jet-powered Shahed strike drones, including the Geran-4 and Geran-5. These munitions travel between 400 and 600 kilometers per hour, rendering previous quadcopter designs inadequate. Ukrainian air force data indicates that jet-powered drone launches increased from 350 in June to 2,800 in August, causing interception rates to drop from 90% for propeller models to 60% for jet models.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) developed a delta-wing interceptor that has already destroyed two Geran-5 drones. Simultaneously, the manufacturer Wild Hornets produced the Sting S interceptor, which the 1020th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment deployed to shoot down several Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones. The Sting S utilizes Hornet Vision Ctrl technology, allowing operators to control the vehicle from hundreds of miles away.

This initiative involves 67 companies working on interceptors to provide a cost-effective alternative to ground-based air defenses. While the Armed Forces of Ukraine are currently evaluating four advanced models in active combat sectors, approximately 10 other manufacturers are conducting prototype tests. Zelenskyy stated that the effort is part of a broader strategy to provide Ukraine greater protection against long-range aerial bombardments in urban centers such as Kyiv, Kherson, Kryvyi Rih, and Zaporizhzhia.
