Judge Dismisses DOJ Lawsuit Against California Transgender Sports Policy

US District Judge Cynthia Valenzuela dismissed a lawsuit filed by the United States Department of Justice that challenged California's policy of allowing transgender youth to compete on sports teams matching their gender identity. The federal government argued that California's inclusive policies violated Title IX and should be banned to maintain federal funding.

Judge Valenzuela ruled that the federal government failed to provide clear notice to the state that funding was contingent on banning transgender girls from sports. She noted that federal guidelines on the issue have shifted frequently over the last decade. While the Supreme Court of the United States recently upheld similar bans in West Virginia and Idaho, Valenzuela clarified that the high court did not mandate a national ban.

The Department of Justice expressed disappointment with the order and stated it is evaluating options for appeal to continue enforcing the agenda of President Donald Trump.
