Federal Reserve Minutes Reveal Inflation Fears Amid Rate Hold

The Federal Open Market Committee warns that persistent inflation may become embedded in business decisions, potentially forcing future interest rate hikes.

Minutes from the July 28-29 meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee reveal growing concern that persistent inflation is becoming embedded in business wage- and price-setting decisions. This risk follows 65 consecutive months of headline inflation exceeding the Federal Reserve's 2% target, a trend driven by supply shocks from the COVID-19 pandemic, tariffs, and the Iran war.

While Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh and the committee kept interest rates unchanged during the last two meetings, the decision was not unanimous. Three regional presidents dissented, arguing for a quarter-point rate hike to preempt the need for more aggressive action in the future.

Policymakers noted that while artificial intelligence is expected to be disinflationary over the long term, its current effect on consumer prices is limited to select categories. The prospect of entrenched inflation expectations may force the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates, a move that could threaten the current AI-driven stock market rally.
