Pentagon Increases Iran Conflict Casualty Count to 21 Dead
The United States Department of Defense updated its official casualty count to 21 killed and 865 wounded following congressional criticism over reporting transparency.
The United States Department of Defense increased the official casualty count for the conflict with Iran, now reporting 21 service members killed and 865 wounded. The updated figures, posted to the Defense Casualty Analysis System website, include troops in support roles. This adjustment follows criticism from the House Armed Services Committee and members of Congress regarding reporting discrepancies and a lack of transparency.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth previously dismissed reports of higher casualty numbers as "FAKE" and a "complete LIE." The department has a history of fluctuating tallies for the conflict, which Hegseth calls Operation Epic Fury. U.S. Representatives Adam Smith and Chrissy Houlahan jointly criticized the Pentagon, stating there is "no excuse for a mistake of this magnitude."
The updates occur amid ongoing hostilities, including U.S. Central Command airstrikes against Iran and a naval blockade of Iranian ports. While President Donald Trump announced a cease-fire in June, hostilities resumed in July after Iranian missile strikes hit a U.S. base in Jordan, killing three Americans. The U.S. military is reportedly preparing options to restart major combat operations following the November 3 midterm elections.
