India and China Agree to Use Military Channels for Border Peace

India and China held the 36th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) in New Delhi on August 6, 2026. The delegations, led by Joint Secretary Sujit Ghosh for India and Director General Hou Yanqi for China, engaged in frank discussions regarding boundary delimitation, border management, and the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The Ministry of External Affairs of India and its Chinese counterpart agreed to continue using existing diplomatic and military channels, including local commander-level meetings, to resolve outstanding issues and prevent miscalculations. India specifically requested the early convening of the Expert Level Mechanism on trans-border rivers and urged China to share technical details regarding its upstream projects.

Despite the agreement to maintain communication, significant tensions persist. India continues to object to Chinese projects in territories it claims in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Additionally, India denied Chinese claims that it had provided assurances regarding Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan and Tibet. Indian officials emphasized that peace and stability in border areas remain a prerequisite for the normalization of bilateral relations.
