Lindner Center Debunks Hoax About Texas Senate Candidate James Talarico

James Talarico debunked viral conspiracy theories claiming he was institutionalized in Ohio after he missed campaign events due to the flu.

A viral conspiracy theory claiming James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for the Texas Senate, had been institutionalized at a mental health facility in Ohio was debunked after a week of amplification by conservative figures. The hoax emerged after Talarico missed public appearances from September 30 to October 9, an absence he attributed to the flu.

Right-wing influencer Ryan Amacher orchestrated the rumor by contacting the Lindner Center for Hope in Mason, Ohio, three times. Amacher admitted to using a fake patient code to bypass security restrictions in an attempt to obtain private health information. The resulting misleading audio clips were promoted by social media influencers and Elon Musk, while Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Talarico was "MISSING IN ACTION!"

The Craig & Frances Lindner Center of Hope eventually clarified that Talarico was never a patient. Talarico further refuted the claims by providing home security footage to the New York Times and noting his presence at events in Austin and Dallas during the period in question. Following the debunking, reports surfaced regarding Ryan Amacher's history of extremist and antisemitic social media posts. Rhein Amacher later stated the situation had been blown out of proportion and declared the matter closed.
