Trump Launches $25 Million Rewards Program to Combat SNAP Fraud
President Donald Trump launched a $25 million rewards program to report food stamp fraud after the Justice Department identified $42 million in stolen benefits.
The Donald Trump administration has initiated a federal crackdown on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) after the Justice Department reported that more than $42 million in benefits were stolen. To incentivize reporting, the president launched a $25 million rewards program, asserting that the effort to eliminate fraud will save trillions of dollars.
Federal prosecutors have already pursued high-profile indictments to illustrate program abuse. These include social media influencer Shawty Dred, who is accused of $4.4 million in fraud, and Fernandez Guzman, who faces charges for identity theft and stealing $22,000 in benefits. Attorney General Todd Blanche described the fraud as a concerted effort to take food from children.
Critics and Democrats argue the administration is using fraud as a pretext to dismantle the program. They point to the One Big Beautiful Bill, which has already resulted in over five million people losing benefits due to stricter work and eligibility requirements. Representative James Walkinshaw accused the administration of weakening oversight by systematically firing inspectors general and cutting staff to avoid independent scrutiny.
