Russia Strikes Ukrainian Telecoms as Ukraine Hits Russian Rail

Russian forces launched a series of strikes against Ukraine's communications infrastructure on September 27, 2026, targeting the headquarters of Kyivstar, the country's largest mobile provider, in Kyiv's Shevchenkivsky district. The Russian Ministry of Defence also claimed to have hit a data center belonging to Vodafone Ukraine. While Kyivstar reported no casualties at its head office, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that separate strikes on a Kyiv data center that morning wounded an adult and two children.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Russia is targeting these facilities to disrupt the flow of information and critical missile and drone alerts. The digital ministry reported that strikes on internet provider data centers over the past week caused service outages for approximately 100,000 households in and around Kyiv. Simultaneously, drone attacks across the Kyiv region killed three civilians and damaged 21 civilian sites, including warehouses in Brovary and a market in Bucha.

In response, Ukrainian drone strikes targeted railway infrastructure at three locations in Russia's Bryansk Region on September 28, 2026. The attacks caused the collapse of a bridge section on the Dyatkovo-Lyudinovo rail line, derailing ten train cars, and derailed another 18 empty freight cars in the Unecha District. Acting Governor Egor Kovalchuk reported no injuries occurred during the strikes.
