India Sends Fifth Relief Flight to Flood-Stricken Nepal

The Government of India dispatched a fifth tranche of relief supplies to Nepal on September 3, including 5.5 tonnes of essential medicines and an 11-member rescue team with specialized equipment. This latest shipment brings the total amount of relief materials delivered to 68.5 tonnes, including doctors, paramedics, and technical contingents, following an initial commitment by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 26.

Flash floods that began on August 26 have caused catastrophic damage in central Nepal, destroying 40 kilometers of roads and 80 bridges. Nepalese authorities report that the death toll has risen to over 1,000 people, with approximately 4,000 still missing, although emergency teams have rescued more than 12,000 individuals.

India has deployed technical teams with heavy machinery to rescue workers trapped in flooded tunnels in the Chilime and Syaphrubesi regions. Additionally, a 19-member forensic team is collaborating with the Nepal Police's Central Forensic Science Laboratory to assist in DNA analysis and victim identification. Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava stated that India will respond positively to any requests for reconstruction aid as the country transitions from search and rescue to long-term rehabilitation.
