Donald Trump Proposes Using Tariff Revenue to Pay National Debt
President Donald Trump proposed using tariff revenues to reduce the $37 trillion national debt and fund a public dividend despite Treasury data showing insufficient revenue.
President Donald Trump proposed using tariff revenues to pay down the $37 trillion United States national debt and potentially fund a public dividend for citizens. The White House argues that a combination of tariffs, deregulation, and pro-growth policies is improving the national debt-to-GDP ratio.
Treasury data contradicts these goals, showing that monthly tariff revenues of $29.6 billion are insufficient to cover monthly interest expenses, which reached $60.95 billion in July. Economists Joao Gomes and Desmond Lachman argue that while tariffs might slow the growth of the debt, they cannot meaningfully reduce the overall balance.
While some market indicators remain stable, the Conference Board warns that the United States is on a dangerous debt trajectory. The organization suggests the administration's revenue goals are unrealistic given the scale of the current deficit.
