Indian Stock Markets Fall as Oil Prices Rise
Indian stock indices declined Tuesday as geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran drove Brent crude prices to a one-week high.
Indian stock markets declined on Tuesday as rising crude oil prices dampened investor sentiment. The BSE Sensex fell as much as 464.64 points to an intraday low of 78,077.80, while the NSE Nifty dropped 143.45 points to 24,440.35. Financial stocks led the decline, though IT stocks saw modest gains based on optimism regarding U.S. interest rate trajectories.
Donald Trump, President of the United States, drove the volatility by demanding compensation from Iran. This demand, coupled with disputes over the Strait of Hormuz, pushed Brent crude to a one-week high of $88.09 per barrel. Iran reiterated its own conditions for reopening the strait during the standoff.
Analysts warn that the surge in oil prices threatens to stoke inflation and widen India's import bill. Despite the intraday volatility, Foreign Institutional Investors remained net buyers, injecting ₹1,974.76 crore into equities on Monday.
