UK Appoints First Cabinet-Level Minister for Artificial Intelligence

Prime Minister Andy Burnham promoted Kanishka Narayan to the Cabinet as the Minister for Artificial Intelligence, making the United Kingdom the first European nation to establish a dedicated cabinet-level position for the technology. The appointment is part of a broader government reshuffle in which Burnham removed several allies of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, including David Lammy and Peter Kyle.

As part of a Whitehall overhaul, the government scrapped the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and absorbed its functions into a new Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade led by Jonathan Reynolds. Narayan, who previously served as a junior minister for AI and online safety under Starmer, is now tasked with overseeing the AI Safety Institute and attracting investment for tech labs and data centers.

To increase British global influence and reduce dependence on U.S.-developed models, Narayan is advocating for a sovereign AI strategy. This initiative includes a £500 million Sovereign AI Fund and a £1.1 billion AI Hardware Plan. These moves follow international scrutiny of the UK's AI strategy and previous criticisms regarding inconsistent technology policies and infrastructure delays, such as a proposed OpenAI data center.
