APC Wins Four of Five Legislative Bye-Elections in Nigeria

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won four of five legislative bye-elections held on September 19, 2026, across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, and Delta states. The party secured seats in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency and the Dawakin Kudu, Udu, and Disina state constituencies. The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) won the remaining seat in the Sakwa State Constituency in Bauchi State.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hailed the victories as evidence of grassroots confidence in his administration's economic reforms. While praising the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting the polls, Tinubu urged the commission to address shortcomings before the general elections scheduled for January and February 2027. INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan described the bye-elections as a test of the commission's logistics and technology.

Simultaneously, APC leaders began mobilization for the 2027 general elections. In Port Harcourt, officials urged women to lead voter sensitization, while Rivers State APC Chairman Tony Okocha reaffirmed support for the Rainbow Coalition to attract non-party voters. In Osogbo, APC chieftain Olatunbosun Oyintiloye advised the president to prioritize national security over opposition tactics following a Department of State Service alert regarding potential attacks in southern Nigeria.

Minister Festus Keyamo noted the strategic importance of these wins, specifically regarding the constitutional requirement for presidential candidates to secure 25 percent of votes in two-thirds of the states and the Federal Capital Territory.
