Josh Shapiro Urges Federal AI Regulation After Anthropic Warning

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro urged the U.S. President and Congress to establish regulatory guardrails for artificial intelligence development. Shapiro's call for action follows a proposal titled "We Must Pace the Frontier" by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, which warns that unchecked AI development risks catastrophes including bioterrorism, cyberattacks, and a total loss of system control.

Amodei's proposal outlines a three-step safety framework involving the use of third-party evaluators, the creation of safety standards coordinated among democratic nations, and global compliance efforts between democratic and authoritarian governments. While Amodei noted that AI could potentially cure most diseases within a decade, he argued that the current lack of safeguards is unsustainable.

Shapiro endorsed the need for third-party regulation, arguing that private entities should not exclusively steer the trajectory of AI development. He compared the necessary oversight to the regulatory roles of the FDA for pharmaceuticals and the FAA for aircraft manufacturing. Describing Amodei's warnings as a "bright red flashing light," Shapiro stated that the federal government must act immediately to establish protections both domestically and on the global stage.
