Russian Drone Strike Kills 15 at Kryvyi Rih Mall
Russian forces killed at least 15 people in a double-tap drone strike on a Kryvyi Rih shopping mall, prompting retaliatory Ukrainian strikes inside Russia.
The Russian Armed Forces executed a double-tap drone strike on the Soniachna Halereia (Sun Gallery) shopping mall in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, on August 21, 2026. The attack utilized Geran-4 jet-powered drones, with a second wave targeting emergency responders 30 minutes after the initial hit. Casualty reports varied throughout the day, with the Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Military Administration reporting 15 deaths and 130 injuries, including 23 children, while other reports cited 14 deaths and 121 injuries.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike as a "cynical and despicable" terrorist act and an "absolute atrocity," describing the attackers as "beasts." He vowed that Ukraine would respond to the strike. The attack followed a nighttime strike on Kyiv 24 hours prior that killed at least 16 people.
Simultaneously, Ukraine launched long-range drone strikes inside Russia, hitting a Lukoil-operated oil refinery in Perm, the Marinovka military airfield in the Volgograd region, and a car in the Belgorod region, where one person was killed. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed to have intercepted 325 Ukrainian drones across 15 regions and Crimea. While the United States called for renewed negotiations, the Kremlin stated it remains open to new ideas if they align with Vladimir Putin's demands.
