South Korea Launches First Commercial Arctic Trade Voyage
The PanStar Acro departed Busan for Europe to test the Northern Sea Route as part of a government plan to establish Arctic trade by 2030.
The PanStar Acro, a South Korean container ship, departed Busan on August 22 for Europe to test the viability of the Northern Sea Route. This marks South Korea's first commercial voyage through the Arctic, carrying 837 TEU of cargo, including auto parts and chemical products. The vessel is scheduled to hug Russia's Kamchatka peninsula and cross the Bering Sea before making stops in Felixstowe, Britain; Rotterdam, Netherlands; and Gdansk, Poland.
The 40-to-45-day journey is a government-backed priority led by President Lee Jae Myung. The administration aims to transform Busan into a global maritime hub and establish the Arctic as a regular trade route by 2030.
The voyage has created tension with Western allies who are working to isolate Russia during its war in Ukraine. This friction stems from the fact that South Korean officials consulted with Moscow to secure ice-related assistance and navigation support for the transit.
