US Sanctions Shadow Fleet and Blockades Iranian Oil Exports
The United States imposed sanctions on Iran's shadow fleet and executed a naval blockade to freeze billions in oil revenue and cryptocurrency.
The United States Department of the Treasury launched Operation Economic Outcast on October 16, imposing sanctions on 17 vessels, shipping networks, and individuals involved in transporting Iranian crude oil and petrochemicals. Treasury officials stated the move neutralizes the majority of Iran's shadow fleet, restricting funding for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, cyberattacks, and missile development. Only about 20 million barrels of crude oil remain outside the blockade near China, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Complementing these sanctions, President Donald Trump announced that the United States Navy is conducting an effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Admiral Brad Cooper of US Central Command reported that the blockade has prevented Iran from exporting $25 billion worth of oil. Additionally, the U.S. assisted in freezing $350 million in cryptocurrency belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Despite these economic measures, Donald Trump announced on social media that the U.S. and Iran are engaged in "productive discussions" regarding the war that began on February 28. He further stated that the U.S. will not attack Iran before the November 3 midterm elections.
