Andy Burnham Calls for MP Security Review After Widdecombe Murder

Incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham demanded a security review for lawmakers after a targeted attack killed veteran politician Ann Widdecombe.

Incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham called for a serious review of security for members of parliament following the suspected murder of veteran politician Ann Widdecombe. Counter-terrorism police described the death as a targeted attack after Widdecombe was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon. A 28-year-old British man has been arrested on suspicions of murder and terrorism-related offenses.

Burnham stated that politics has darkened over the last decade and suggested that protections must increase to combat growing toxicity in political debate. In response to the incident and growing threats, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood offered Reform UK leader Nigel Farage emergency talks with the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec).

Reform UK has raised disputes regarding state protection, claiming that a previous security package offered to Farage was a 75% downgrade from prior levels. The party also argues that proposed government caps on political donations would prevent them from funding the private security they believe is necessary. While Speaker of the House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle asserted that all MPs are treated equally regarding security, Mahmood committed to reviewing arrangements for both current lawmakers and politically active former members.
