Josh Kaul Wins Third Term as Wisconsin Attorney General

Democrat Josh Kaul defeated Republican Eric Toney to secure a third term as Wisconsin Attorney General in a rematch of the 2022 election.

Democratic incumbent Josh Kaul won a third term as Wisconsin Attorney General on November 3, 2026, defeating Republican challenger Eric Toney with 54% of the vote. The election served as a rematch of the 2022 race, which Kaul also won by a narrow margin.

During the campaign, Toney, the Fond du Lac County District Attorney, criticized Kaul over increased turnaround times at state crime labs. Kaul defended the figures by citing more precise DNA analysis methods and attributed the delays to Republican budget cuts. Kaul focused his platform on public safety, gun control, and his record of filing over 70 multi-state lawsuits against the administration of President Donald Trump concerning mail-in voting, birthright citizenship, and tariffs.

Toney conceded the race at 9:45 p.m. on election night. Kaul's victory coincided with other Democratic gains in the state, including David Crowley's win in the gubernatorial race. Kaul is scheduled to begin his third term in January.
