McLaren Invests £500 Million to Build First Performance SUV

McLaren Automotive is investing £500 million to expand UK operations and build its first performance SUV, creating 1,000 new jobs by 2032.

McLaren Automotive is investing £500 million to expand its United Kingdom manufacturing and research capabilities to develop a new generation of models, including its first-ever performance SUV. Funded by Abu Dhabi-based L'IMAD Holding Company, the investment will support the construction of a new bespoke vehicle assembly facility, with Sheffield identified as the preferred site. The company also plans to expand its Production Centre in Woking and its Composites Technology Centre in South Yorkshire.

For the first time in its history, McLaren will bring powertrain development in-house, designing and manufacturing two new engines and transmissions as part of a hybrid strategy. This shift includes moving beyond rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive configurations to include front-engined and potentially four-wheel-drive vehicles. The expansion is expected to create 1,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2032 and up to 3,000 additional roles across the supply chain.

Chief Executive Nick Collins stated the SUV targets wealthy Formula One fans and families, aiming to double annual sales from 3,000 units. While the company recently merged with electric vehicle startup Forseven Holdings, leadership maintains there is currently no customer demand for a fully electric model. Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds welcomed the move, characterizing it as a major step toward reindustrializing Britain and a vote of confidence in the UK's advanced manufacturing sector.
