Russia and Ukraine Launch Reciprocal Long-Range Aerial Strikes

Russian and Ukrainian forces engaged in a series of reciprocal aerial attacks on July 27, 2026, resulting in multiple civilian deaths and widespread property damage across both nations. Russian forces launched ballistic missiles and drones at targets in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia. A drone strike on a supermarket in Chernihiv killed two people, while missiles in Kyiv ignited fires in residential tower blocks. Russia's defense ministry claimed the Kyiv strikes targeted drone production sites. At least six people died across these Ukrainian regions, including two Naftogaz employees in Sloviansk.

Simultaneously, Volodymyr Zelenskiy initiated a strategic pressure campaign of long-range strikes against Russian logistics and energy sites. Ukrainian drones struck the Belgorod region, wounding 12 civilians, and Rostov-on-Don, where five people, including a child, were killed. Additionally, a Ukrainian drone strike in the occupied city of Horlivka killed four civilians. Russian authorities reported intercepting between 133 and 276 Ukrainian drones, while Ukrainian air defenses downed 15 over Dnipropetrovsk.

President Zelenskiy characterized the Russian strikes as "deliberate Russian terror that has no military justification." In a separate development, President Vladimir Putin delivered a Navy Day speech in which he condemned Western attempts to seize Russia-linked oil tankers as piracy, stating the need to act "decisively" in line with international maritime law.
