Bangladesh Tensions Rise Over India's Ties to Sheikh Hasina

Diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh have strained following a virtual press interaction held by ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi on August 5. The event sparked outrage in Bangladesh, though the Ministry of External Affairs of India denied any involvement in the interaction.

Salahuddin Ahmed, the Bangladesh Home Minister, warned that India cannot maintain friendly ties while playing the "Hasina card." This friction centers on demands for the extradition of Hasina, who received a death sentence in absentia in November 2025. The tension has cast doubt on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's attendance at the 18th BRICS Summit outreach session in New Delhi on September 12-13, where he was invited as the Chair of BIMSTEC.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi expressed confidence that a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Rahman could resolve the current bilateral strains. Trivedi stated that he remains positive about the situation, suggesting that direct leadership engagement typically sorts out such problems.
