Trump Promotes $15 Billion Iowa Steel Mill Project

President Donald Trump touted a $15 billion steel mill in Iowa as state lawmakers approved $1 billion in tax incentives for Mesabi Metallics.

Donald Trump promoted the construction of a $15 billion steel mill in Iowa during an October 22 rally in Sioux City. The project, led by Mesabi Metallics, is projected to create more than 1,700 permanent jobs. Trump attributed the profitability of such American steel ventures to current tariff policies.

In a rapid legislative response, Iowa state lawmakers convened a one-day special session to approve over $1 billion in tax incentives for Mesabi Metallics. Critics argued the session was rushed to influence upcoming midterm elections, and the president of the United Steelworkers International questioned the necessity of these incentives.

Local reactions remain mixed. While the White House emphasizes industrial growth, some farmers and workers expressed concern over inflation and rising fertilizer costs following a February war with Iran. Separately, the town of Clinton is weighing a proposal from Quality Technology Services to build a data center campus on 1,100 acres of farmland, which would generate $20 million in annual tax revenue but faces grassroots opposition.
