Trump Conditions $16 Billion Rail Funding on Landmark Renaming

President Donald Trump offered to unfreeze $16 billion in federal funding for the Gateway rail tunnel project, which connects New York and New Jersey, on the condition that New York's Penn Station and Washington Dulles International Airport be renamed in his honor. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer rejected the proposal, stating he lacked the authority to rename the landmarks and dismissing a later claim by Trump that he had suggested the renaming as an absolute lie.

The funding was frozen during a previous government shutdown, with Budget Director Russell Vought stating the need to ensure funds were not used for unconstitutional DEI principles. The freeze has led New York and New Jersey to file lawsuits to force the release of the appropriated money. The Gateway tunnel commission warned that construction could shut down, potentially resulting in the loss of over 1,000 jobs.

Democratic lawmakers and officials from New York, New Jersey, and Virginia condemned the demand as narcissism and extortion. Governor Kathy Hochul mocked the request on social media by suggesting Trump Tower be renamed Hochul Tower. This incident follows a broader pattern of administration rebranding efforts, including changes to the Kennedy Center and the U.S. Institute of Peace, as well as the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
