Mayor Zohran Mamdani Faces Backlash Over Rising Rape Statistics
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under fire for attributing a rise in rape reports to an expanded legal definition of the crime.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing criticism after attributing a 6.6% increase in reported rape complaints to an expanded legal definition of the crime and a rise in survivors reporting historical acts. In an interview with PIX11 News, Mamdani defended city crime rates by noting that overall crime has fallen by more than 10 percent, with murders and shootings reaching some of the lowest levels in recorded history.
His comments sparked backlash from critics and New York City Council member Susan Zhuang, who argued that legal definitions should not be used to deflect from the city's responsibility to reduce sexual violence. The mayor's office defended the remarks by citing the 2024 Rape is Rape Act, signed by Governor Kathy Hochul, which expanded the legal classification of rape beyond vaginal penetration. However, NYPD CompStat data from January through July 2026 shows the increase in reports occurred well after the 2024 legal changes took effect.
Separately, President Donald Trump characterized Mamdani as a communist during a July 4 speech at Mount Rushmore, describing such ideologies as a threat to American liberty. This political tension coincides with ongoing disputes within the City Council regarding the mayor's response to felony assault and sexual violence trends.
