Trump Imposes Tariffs on India Over Russian Oil Purchases

President Donald Trump imposed a 50 percent tariff on India, which includes a 25 percent punitive levy specifically targeting New Delhi's purchase of Russian crude oil. The administration accused India of funding the war in Ukraine through these imports. While Indian officials described the tariffs as unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable, Trump recently signaled a softer tone toward the country, citing his close relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized the U.S. approach during an appearance on the television program 'The Great Game.' Lavrov argued that tariff threats against India and China are failing because such pressure tactics do not work on ancient civilizations. He asserted that Washington's demands are pushing these nations to seek new energy markets and resources while creating political opposition to U.S. policy.

Trump has also urged NATO members to implement collective tariffs of 50 to 100 percent on China to break its economic grip over Russia. Lavrov dismissed the impact of new sanctions on Russia, claiming Moscow has already adapted to Western restrictions imposed during the first Trump administration and the subsequent term of Joe Biden.
