Anita Anand Leads Trade Push to Diversify Canadian Exports

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is leading a trade-focused diplomatic initiative to revive stagnant relationships across Asia, Africa, and South America. This strategy, directed by Prime Minister Mark Carney's government, aims to double non-U.S. trade over the next 10 years by positioning Canada as a reliable provider of energy, food, and critical minerals.

As part of this push, Anand recently visited Islamabad, marking the first time a Canadian foreign minister has visited Pakistan in 19 years. She is also scheduled to visit the Philippines to assist in finalizing a trade deal with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations by November. To date, the government has signed 20 economic or security arrangements, including agreements with Qatar and Indonesia.

While the government describes this as a new way of doing diplomacy, the approach faces domestic criticism. The Conservative Party and the New Democratic Party have argued that the initiative lacks transparency and is being hampered by public service cuts to diplomatic missions.
