Trump Attempts to Dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook

The independence of the Federal Reserve has become precarious following two Supreme Court of the United States rulings, Trump v. Slaughter and Trump v. Cook, which expanded presidential authority over independent agencies. While the court recognized the unique standing of the Federal Reserve Board in the Cook decision, the 5-4 vote left the institution vulnerable to executive pressure.

Donald Trump has utilized this judicial shift to make renewed attempts to dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. Chief Justice Bartholomew Roberts invoked common-law tradition to justify the bank's unique status, but the narrow margin of the ruling has prompted concerns regarding the central bank's susceptibility to political influence and arbitrary removal.

In response to these threats, some propose restructuring the Federal Reserve to mirror the Government Accountability Office. This model would designate the bank as an instrumentality of the United States Government independent of executive departments, effectively shifting it to a legislative agency while preserving the president's power to nominate governors for Senate confirmation.
