European Commission Approves €6.1 Billion for Ukraine Defense

The European Commission approved €6.1 billion in funding on August 24, 2026, to assist Ukraine in purchasing critical military equipment. The allocation focuses on the procurement of air defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radar systems, with the Commission specifying that most of these weapons will be sourced from European defense companies.

This funding is part of a larger €90 billion loan package. With this latest approval, the total value of approved procurement plans for Ukraine has reached €22.1 billion. The funds will be utilized by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to bolster national defenses.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated the funding is a response to intensifying Russian attacks and serves to help Ukraine protect its people and airspace. She emphasized that Europe stands with Ukraine and will deliver necessary resources as they are needed.
