US Migration Preference Hits 20-Year Low After Border Reforms
Gallup reports that global desire to migrate to the United States has reached its lowest level in nearly two decades following border reforms.
A 2025 Gallup poll released in April 2026 reveals that the desire to migrate permanently to the United States has fallen to its lowest level in nearly twenty years. Only 15% of adults worldwide now name the U.S. as their preferred destination, a decline representing approximately 75 million people who have abandoned plans to migrate.
Donald Trump implemented border reforms that drove this trend, with the most significant decreases observed in Latin America. In Honduras, the desire to migrate dropped by 35 percentage points. While migration desire remains near record highs for the European Union and Canada, the U.S. has seen a sharp reversal in its appeal.
The United Nations reported that these border policies contributed to a reduction in migrant deaths within the Americas during 2025. However, the organization noted that death tolls remain high on migration routes from sub-Saharan countries toward Europe.
