Oman and Iran Propose Joint Mine-Clearing in Strait of Hormuz

Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Albusaidi visited Tehran on August 25, 2026, to hold consultations with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi regarding the restoration of safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz following a recent war.

The two officials discussed a proposed framework to establish a temporary joint shipping route and a joint mission to clear mines from the strategic oil export corridor. They reviewed existing maritime safety agreements and emphasized that any new arrangements must adhere to international law and respect the sovereignty of coastal states.

Both ministers described the talks as constructive. The two nations plan to continue technical negotiations to finalize a permanent navigation corridor, a maritime information exchange mechanism, and a long-term management plan for the strait. The officials also stressed the necessity of holding joint discussions with other regional countries bordering the Gulf to ensure stability.
