Putin and Kim Jong Un Affirm Strategic Security Cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un exchanged messages affirming their cooperation across all areas to support regional security and stability. The exchange coincided with the anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule, an event marked by Kim's visit to the Liberation Tower in Pyongyang to honor Soviet soldiers from World War Two.

Putin expressed confidence in continued "constructive joint work" on bilateral and international issues. Kim described the historic wartime ties between the two nations as a cornerstone of their expanding relationship. This diplomatic exchange follows a strategic treaty signed in June 2024 that includes a mutual assistance clause.

The deepening partnership has drawn international concern. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other Western governments have accused North Korea of providing Russia with missiles, ammunition, and promised troops to support the war in Ukraine.
