Israeli Settlers Attack Washington Post Photographer in West Bank

Israeli settlers beat and rob Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine during violent clashes in the West Bank, sparking international condemnation and conflicting reports on the severity of injuries.

Masked Israeli settlers attacked Heidi Levine, a photojournalist for The Washington Post, in the village of Abu Falah on October 16, 2026. Levine reported being kicked approximately 50 times and robbed of her cameras, phone, and passport during a 10-minute assault. The attack occurred amid wider violence across eight northern West Bank villages, where settlers burned cars and olive groves during the annual harvest.

Levine was hospitalized in Ramallah for her injuries. While The Washington Post and Levine described the attack as a brutal beating, the Mateh Binyamin Regional Council disputed these claims, citing footage they claim shows Israeli youths helping Levine up and hospital images showing only a bandaged finger.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) condemned the violence but faced allegations from residents and the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate that soldiers either aided the attackers or failed to intervene. The IDF stated it used riot dispersal means and fired warning shots at a village council member who allegedly approached them with a sharp object.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the violence but characterized the event as a clash between outnumbered Israeli youths and Palestinians. The United States Department of State and the British government condemned the criminal violence, with the UK accusing Israel of ignoring a campaign of ethnic cleansing. The IDF and Israel Police have launched investigations into the incident.
