Justin Pearson Wins Democratic Primary for Tennessee Congress

Tennessee State Representative Justin Pearson won a Democratic congressional primary, establishing himself as a progressive-populist candidate for the November midterm election. A former member of the Tennessee Three expelled for protesting gun control, Pearson is campaigning on a platform that includes voting rights, Medicare for All, and opposition to the American war machine.

Pearson has specifically targeted xAI, an Elon Musk company, for constructing data centers in south Memphis that utilize soot-producing turbines in Black neighborhoods. His campaign utilizes an organizing-first model funded by small individual donations and has earned endorsements from Bernie Sanders, the group Justice Democrats, and David Hogg.

This victory occurs amid heightened tensions in Memphis. A federal task force established by the Trump administration has been linked to the deaths of four Black men over the last 10 months, even as local police report that overall crime has reached a 25-year low.
