The Taliban regime remains in control of Afghanistan five years after the complete withdrawal of American military forces. The exit was executed by President Joe Biden, who followed a withdrawal timetable previously established by Donald Trump as American voters grew weary of the nation's longest war.

While the United States possessed the capability to continue defending Afghanistan's democratically elected government, the administration chose to exit.
