US and Saudi Arabia Conduct Joint Precision Strikes in Iraq

The United States Central Command and the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces conducted joint precision strikes against Iranian-aligned logistics and weapons sites in Iraq on Tuesday. The operations targeted groups including the Popular Mobilization Forces in response to more than 30 drone attacks launched against US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure. The Popular Mobilization Forces reported at least 20 deaths and 32 injuries, while Iran condemned the strikes as a violation of Iraqi sovereignty.

Following the strikes, Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman visited Washington on Wednesday to meet with President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Minister Khalid delivered messages from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman emphasizing a preference for diplomacy and de-escalation with Iran to avoid major risks. Despite this preference, the kingdom stated that attacks on civilian infrastructure are a "red line" necessitating self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

Saudi officials contrasted their position with that of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is reportedly pushing for greater escalation. The Saudi government further asserted its ability to manage the Houthi situation in Yemen independently through ongoing negotiations, stating that direct US involvement is not currently required.
