Senator John Kennedy Considers 2028 Presidential Bid

Senator John Kennedy says he may run for president in 2028 if he believes other Republican candidates are goobers and he can do a better job.

Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana announced on October 4, 2026, that he is considering a run for the U.S. presidency in 2028. During an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," Kennedy stated that while his current priority is seeking re-election to the Senate, he would consider a presidential bid if he feels he can no longer be effective in the Senate or if he believes the Republican field consists of "goobers" and he could perform a better job.

Kennedy declined to discuss a potential primary challenge against Vice President JD Vance, though he noted that a full field of candidates would benefit both political parties. He also identified the cost of living as the most significant issue facing voters in upcoming Senate races in Texas, Michigan, and Ohio, arguing that Washington leaders have let the American people down.

During the interview, Kennedy criticized President Donald Trump for releasing Senator Tom Cotton's personal cellphone number following a dispute over the Sunshine Protection Act and permanent Daylight Saving Time. Kennedy described Trump as "tempestuous," stating he can "go from zero to a-hole in about three seconds," and argued that disputes over daylight savings time do not have "existential significance for the future of Western civilization."
