Vladimir Putin Calls for Multipolar Order at Valdai Meeting
Vladimir Putin called for a transition away from Western hegemony and the reform of the United Nations during a speech in Moscow.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of prolonged global instability and the erosion of international law during the 23rd annual meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club in Moscow. He asserted that the world has reached a "decisive turning point" driven by rapid advancements in biotechnology, the global economy, and artificial intelligence.
Putin advocated for a transition from Western hegemony toward a stable, multipolar international order. He called for the reform of the United Nations to better reflect the influence of the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. On the subject of technology, he cautioned against the existential risks of uncontrolled AI integration and the threat of "digital totalitarianism."
Addressing the conflict in Ukraine, Putin rejected claims that Russia initiated the war, stating that Moscow was "forced to defend itself" against NATO expansion and aggressive nationalism. He further attributed the collapse of the Soviet Union to internal imbalances and a "blind trust" in Western partners.
