Election Experts Warn of Potential Federal Interference in 2026 Midterms

A survey of 37 election administration experts conducted by Votebeat reveals significant concerns regarding potential federal interference in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections. While most experts believe that court blocks will prevent Donald Trump from successfully implementing federal rules on citizenship documentation and mail-ballot restrictions, they warn of the possibility of physical interventions.

Respondents indicated it is likely the federal government could deploy military or law enforcement personnel to polling locations or seize voting equipment, particularly after the election has occurred. These concerns follow statements from Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who declined to rule out deploying federal agents to polling places. Several states, including Florida, Mississippi, South Dakota, and Utah, have already passed their own proof-of-citizenship requirements.
